In contradistinction to this the oscillations

in the primary circuit of the Lepel system åse generated by

"quenched" sparks which give rise to extremely short trains

of oscillations, in fact "jerks" or "kicks" rather than

streams of oscillations.

That is to say though both systems aim at radian

ting from the aerial as much wave energy as possible through

the use of coupled circuits, Marconi does this by steadily

fuuding the radiating circuit with a supply of energy ·

"stroking" it, so to speak, by the oscillations in the primary circuit which are kept swinging for as long a time as possible;

whilst Lepel reaches the same end by means of frequent but

intermittent "ricks" in the primary circuit, the oscillations

Chused in that circuit being damped out as quickly as possible, allowing the oscillations in the radiating circuit to continue

freely.

Lepel requirus tuned circuits as much as Marconi and unless it cæ, be shew that there is no real novelty in

tuning coupled circuits, which is certainly a possibility, he

may to that extent be said to infringe. We do not think it

can be said that Marconi's patunt covers a quenched spark

system seeing that the possibility of using such a system was

unknown when the patent No.7777 was taken out, and it is also

evident that the use of such a spark mi ** the primary circuit
